I hate Battlefield: Bad Company 2, I honestly try to like it and I fiercely try to ignore it’s issues, but that’s exactly it- why the fuck is it having those issues?
I’m only level 2 (and a half) in BC2, but the first impression of the multiplayer is so horrible to me that I’ll abandon it like I abandoned Modern Warfare 2.
Here are four fundamental pieces of hatred that I have for this game.
- The userbase.
Battlefield is perhaps notorious for it’s sniping, clanstacking, fierce tempered userbase. The little kiddies that liked BF2 bought this game and as far as I’ve seen it hasn’t changed much.
I swear truthfully and honest to god, the very first thing to be said to me was ‘l2p crude oil’, I’m not exactly sure what I did wrong however as constructive criticism isn’t something people of <16 are able to produce much.
This wasn’t the first thing I criticized on the game though, the first issue I dealt with was not being able to join any server. at all.
Wow EA games, bravo DICE. I don’t know what goes across the fat cat at the top of these companies’ mind, but I doubt anything of emotion happens there at all.
I’m not even certain this reaches any good natured person at all, I have this feeling that the developers just cut corners developing what they want to call a game.
These people managed to release a game where the multiplayer part, which makes up a lot of the game depending on how you value the singleplayer, doesn’t work! At all!
The very first thing to happen after I created my account was the delightfull connection issues message after attempting to join a server. Apparently this had been going for a while as well as a newsbar at the bottom of the main menu said that EA/DICE was ‘aware of the connection problems some players are having’, I’m quite certain it’s still there at the time of writing.
I personally find this incredibly lazy and really fucking stupid. one small point of light would be that at least they’ve got dedicated servers.
- Balance
One of the selling points of matchmaking is that it’s balanced.
Hahaha, sorry.
No anyway, matchmaking attempts to be balanced, this is one of the arguments to the fantastically stupid discussion of ‘matchmaking > dedicated servers’ though it’s a big fat lie as matchmaking is never balanced.
Dedicated servers only have one problem: Someone is the head admin of it. And since most of the players in BC2 are ‘professional players’ who participate in ’scrims’ to boost their ’skills’ in their ‘clans’, server are bound to be clanservers.
Clanservers are dynamically horrible, whether it’s good or bad depends if the clan the server belongs to is playing.
Because clans need to be totally ‘professional’ and team up to train their ’skills’, they tend to stack on one team. Thus providing them with much better performance through communication and faster ranking. In the end it unbalances the entire game.
And, since the majority of the servers in BC2 are either clanservers or French, the balance is going to be horrible.
- Account system
I’ve skipped a lot of nitpicking by now, amongst which would be modern game gems such as melee attacks that don’t register or the ‘you can see me but I am in no way defined by the laws of the universe able to see you’-effect.
Yesterday at around.. Actually 24 hours ago at the time of writing I unlocked two quite essential unlocks in BC2:
The Powerdrill, used to repair vehicles as an egineer,
And the Medkit, used to repair clanfags as a medic.
I still haven’t received them
I’m also supposed to get a Tommy gun at level 14 or something, but I’ve already got it and can use it. Instead of that I can’t use the M1 Garand that I AM supposed to have.
- It cost me money
I bought 200 euros of games this month, among which Assassin’s Creed 2, which I love and savor every penny of. And this ‘game’.
The above crap that I typed up in a timespan of half an hour or so just sets me off the game, people can nag me to play it but eventually I’ll ask ‘why would I play it’.
‘Because it’s a game, it’s fun’. In my books, it’s neither. It’s an absolute waste of money.
If buying a game worth costing 50 euros gives me less satisfaction than folding a 50 Euro bill it into an airplane and throwing it around. There’s something significantly wrong.
And the issue does not lie with me. Not this time.
